Relaxation and acne: top 5 tips

It might seem obvious to cut stress in your life to get the benefits for your skin, but it’s not that easy to de-stress! Being prone to breakouts, and being stressed aren’t things one can just ‘delete’ out of one’s busy schedule. Here are a few tips on how to kick the stress habit and get better skin.

Exercise: take up a sport

Regular exercise is a great way to combat stress. Try aerobic exercise (such as swimming, football and running) that releases serotonin and increases the "feel good factor" which in turn lowers stress. Anaerobic exercise such as sprinting and weightlifting releases loads of stress too.

Sleep: rest is relaxation

On average we need between six to eight hours' sleep per night. Not sure how much you are really getting? Invest in a basic sleep-tracking App to ensure you are getting your share. Good quality sleep makes you much more productive during the day, meaning you can get more done in less time and get to bed earlier! It’s a win, win situation!

Eat better: improving your diet for better skin

“A good diet is the number one most effective tool in your skin health and stress reduction arsenal” says Charlie Hagan, head of training and nutrition at Hagan and Pappin in London. “Aim to eat at least five portions of whole, unprocessed food and veg daily. The wider variety, the better! Natural vitamins have innumerable positive effects including fortification of the immune system to protect and repair the skin. Add at least two fist-sized portions of good protein daily (organic meat, fish, cheese, eggs, beans etc.) and finally, take a good quality omega 3 fish oil supplement.”

Treat yourself: massage to de-stress

A good quality massage helps with blood and nutrient circulation as well as help to get rid of toxins. Both help with body and skin health, so it’s ok to indulge in some pampering from time to time. And it definitely will leave you feeling relaxed!

Meditate: embrace mindfulness

Certain meditation and deep breathing techniques can help fight stress. “Zoning out” as it’s become known, can help focus the mind, combat outside pressures and stresses and calm the mind and body down to lessen anxiety and stress symptoms. So there you have it: taking some real time out is highly recommended!
