Our top 4 ways to be kinder to your skin

We’re stuck with the skin we’re given, which is a good reason to look after it. It’s the most visible part of our body and its functions are also vital to our well-being. So here are our top tips for being kind to your skin – and we promise it’ll be kind right back!

The outer layer, the epidermis, helps us to shed dead skin cells and keep pores clear, giving our skin that healthy glow. Acting as a protective barrier between us and the world, skin is also our first line of defence against free radicals and other nasties that give us blemishes and accelerate ageing, so here’s how to boost protection.

Sun protection

Most of us tend to underestimate how important it is to protect our skin from the sun regardless of age. The sun’s rays can be incredibly damaging to our skin and can lead to premature aging, breakouts, and uneven pigmentation. However, rest assured, it doesn’t mean you have to stay out of the sun all together. You just need to makes sure you’re protecting your skin properly throughout the day.

Giving yourself regular breaks from the sun to hydrate and top up on your sun cream is always a good idea. Make sure you have the right sun factor protection (SPF) for your skin and wearing a hat is also recommended, first because the skin on your face is a lot more sensitive than the rest of the body and also because it prevents you from getting sun stroke. However, it’s also important to note that spending time outside in the sun allows the body to make vitamin D, helping us absorb calcium in food, in turn keeping our bones and teeth healthy. So don’t fret if you love nothing better than coming home from your holiday with a tan – just remember that to reap the sun’s benefits you just need to stay on top of your protection!

Wash, but don’t go overboard

Cleansing your skin every day is important as it helps to keep bacteria and dirt off your face and out of your pores. However, there’s no need to overdo it. Over-cleansing the skin, or using harsh cleansers and soaps, could strip your skin of the natural oils it needs to stay healthy. It could also lead to a breakdown of your protective skin layer, making it susceptible to blemishes.  The aim isn’t for your skin to become dry and irritated.

If your skin routine isn’t leaving the skin feeling comfortable and radiant, then experiment with better-adapted products for your skin type and methods, preferring something simple and gentle, and don’t cleanse more than twice a day, even if you have oily skin.

Eyes

The eye area is the first part of your face that anyone looks at, so be sure to give them some love. The skin around the eyes is incredibly sensitive and delicate, and that’s why it’s so susceptible to dark circles, puffiness, and the appearance of tiny veins. So invest in an eye cream which is sensitive enough to use on this delicate piece of skin and moisturise it in using your ring finger, as this is your weakest and least likely to disrupt the skin.

Eating the rights foods

Being kind to your skin is also about what you’re putting in your body. For great skin, make sure you’re having enough of skin-friendly foods like avocados, salmon, and almonds, which all contain that all-important omega-3 fatty acid as well as antioxidants. Antioxidants potentially protect the skin against free radical damage and fight signs of ageing, as well as reduce inflammation.
